We are excited to announce the 2017-18 programs below! Find the annual membership and program registration forms here. Feel free to fill them out in advance to save yourself time on registration night. There will be two registration evenings. The first will be a mass registration with other community groups at the Teulon Rockwood Centennial Centre, Wed, Sept 6th, 5-8pm (to coincide with the Teulon Elementary School Open House) and the second night with be Thurs, Sept 14th, 5-7pm at Green Acres Art Centre. If these dates are not convenient for you, please let us know and we can arrange to get you registered at another time. Payment plans are available for all GAAC classes; arrangements for this can be made at the time of registration.

DANCE WITH MS. ALYCIA AND MISS ELENA – THURSDAYS AND FRIDAYS

We are thrilled to welcome back Ms. Alycia Campbell and Miss Elena Modrzejewski as our instructors for another amazing year at the GAAC! Similar to last year, classes are available for beginners, juniors, intermediates and teens. Approximate ages for classes have been provided with final placement to be determined by Ms. Alycia and Miss Elena. A costume deposit of $40/costume is required at the time of registration. Any additional costume charges (ranging anywhere from $0 to $30) will be due later in the year once final costume fees have been calculated. A student enrolled in more than one class with Ms. Alycia and Miss Elena may be eligible to receive $50 off their second dance class, if minimum numbers for that class have been met (to be determined after registration).  

 Thursdays – September 28 to April 19 (26 weeks)

Pre-Ballet and Pre-Jazz – Beginner Class (Approximate Age 4 to 5), 4-5pm – $300 + Costume

Includes two in-class parent viewings and one routine performed at Rockwood Festival of the Arts, Final Dance Recital and Canada Day.

An Introduction to the music, movement and technique of Ballet and Jazz. Students will develop a strong vocabulary of Ballet technique while exploring the many styles of movement associated with Jazz. The perfect class to introduce your tiny dancer to both Ballet and Jazz.

Ballet and Introduction to Lyrical – Junior Class (Approximate Age 6 to 7), 5-6pm – $300 + Costume

Includes two in-class parent viewings and one routine performed at Rockwood Festival of the Arts, Final Dance Recital and Canada Day.

This class combines the classical style of Ballet with an Introduction to Lyrical. Ballet is a form of dance based on precise steps with gestures and movements of grace and fluidity. Lyrical is a genre that is a combination of Ballet technique with Jazz movement set to expressive lyrics of music. A foundation of technique is introduced and fostered every week for the student to grow within the discipline.

Ballet and Lyrical – Intermediate Class (Approximate Age 8 to 11), 6-7:30pm – $400 + 2 Costumes

Looking to introduce dance to your little one? This class does just that by providing an introduction to movement with music for Dance. Each class is designed to teach the basics of dance in a fun and encouraging atmosphere while introducing students to a class setting. Through movement the students learn about their bodies, the space around them, and how music brings that together.

Boys Funk Hip Hop (Approximate Age 6 & up), 5-6pm – $300 + Costume

Includes two in-class parent viewings and one routine performed at Rockwood Festival of the Arts, Final Dance Recital and Canada Day.

A class just for the boys! This class introduces students to Hip Hop with the technique and athleticism of Jazz. A great class to start learning rhythm and music with some funky and fun dance moves. 

Jazz and Kids Hip Hop – Junior Class (Approximate Age 6-8), 6-7pm – $300 + Costume

Includes two in-class parent viewings and one routine performed at Rockwood Festival of the Arts, Final Dance Recital and Canada Day.

Jazz dance is a popular form of dance with roots in African movement set to contemporary music. Sharp accents, fast turns and high jumps are some of the elements learned in this class. Kids Hip Hop is an introduction to Hip Hop, a fun and challenging dance style set to the music of today combining body isolations with intricate rhythmic patterns. Students will learn the vocabulary of both genres that will foster the proper foundations of growth for the students to excel within this class.

Jazz and Hip Hop – Intermediate and Teen Class (Approximate Age 9 and Up), 7-8:30pm  – $400 + 2 Costumes

The combination of body isolations and intricate rhythmic patterns allow for the students to learn about the three different styles of hip hop; Breaking, Popping, and Locking. Students will learn the vocabulary of both genres that will foster the proper foundations of growth for the students to excel within this class.

HIGHLAND DANCE WITH MISS LESLEY BOND

25 weeks on Wednesdays from October 4 to April 11 – $300. Additional costume cost required.

Beginners (new and returning) from 5:30-6:30pm and Returning Intermediate from 6:30-7:30pm

We are excited to once again offer Highland dance classes with our much-loved, long-time instructor Miss Lesley. We are fortunate to have local talent like Lesley in our community with such extensive experience as a Highland dancer, competitor and instructor. In a fun and challenging environment, students will learn fundamental Highland dance skills including foot and hand positions and basic movements that will be put together to form a dance. As dancers progress, new dances are introduced. Registration includes dance fees and performances at Rockwood Festival of the Arts, the Final Dance Recital and Canada Day.

½ HOUR INDIVIDUAL LESSONS FOR ALL AGES IN GUITAR, BASS AND DRUMS WITH SHANE TAITE

Shane is back this year to share his expertise of various music styles, genres and techniques. Shane has been playing music most of his life and has a degree in guitar with the London college of music. Classes are open to all ages who are interested in music and taking their fascination to the next level. Whether you’re into rock, blues, country, pop, strumming chords around the camp fire, singer songwriting or laying down solos in the studio, he will have a lesson plan for you. Student requires instrument.

½ HOUR INDIVIDUAL LESSONS IN PIANO WITH ASHLEY TEICHRIB

We are super happy to welcome back the lovely Ashley Teichrib for private 12 week sessions in piano. She has been teaching piano to all ages in both practical and theory for nine years. She is much loved by the children she teaches and enjoys playing the piano regularly with her family and church group. She has completed her grade 10 theory and practical and has met the piano-performance and music theory qualifications needed to become a teacher of the internationally acclaimed Music for Young Children Program (MYC). See below for additional information about the MYC program she will be teaching at GAAC this year. Opportunities available for students to perform at Rockwood Festival of the Arts and Recitals.

MUSIC FOR YOUNG CHILDREN (MYC) – SUNRISE PROGRAM WITH ASHLEY TEICHRIB

Ashley was busy over the summer receiving the MYC training and qualifications needed to offer this exciting, innovative and rewarding pre-school music program, new to the GAAC this year! The Sunrise Program for ages 2-3 is a group class that meets once a week for 45 minutes, accompanied by an adult (parent, guardian or caregiver). Children develop listening awareness, fine motor skills, attention span and social skills using songs and games that include singing, rhythm and ear training. Maximum of 8 pairs per session so register early to secure your spot!

THEATRE WITH ANGELA FROM MANITOBA THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE (MTYP)

$225 for 22 weeks on Tuesdays from October 17 to April 10 – Creative Drama for Grades K to 3 from 4:15-5:15pm and Junior Acting for Grades 4 to 6 from 5:15-6:15pm.

Learn to act and perform in a play directed by a professional instructor from Manitoba Theatre for Young People’s Theatre School! Welcome back to our much-loved instructor Angela Chalmers who will guide the students through another season of theatre. Express yourself through movement and voice work, an amazing opportunity for sporty and artsy kids alike. Each age group will perform a play at the end of the year.

Creative Drama for Kindergarten to Grade Three (1 hour)

A fun and encouraging introduction to theatre and drama, this class combines the fun of making simple masks, props, and puppets with the adventure of using those creations in acting out stories. Students develop their imaginations and powers of self-expression through drama games, music and dance, story theatre, and role playing.  A great class for anyone who loves to make believe!

Junior Acting for Grades Four to Six (1 hour)

What is acting about?  How do you begin? This course gives you the chance to build your acting skills through dramatic exercises, creative movement and story creation.  Learn to share ideas and invent scenes through improvisation and teamwork. Join the fun of imagining, learning, and performing.

ADULT PAINTING WITH GRAHAM CLARKE

Painting $130 per 10 week session – Wednesdays 1-3pm September 13 – November 29, Session 2 Jan – Mar, Session 3 Apr – Jun

Graham is a much-cherished founding member of the GAAC, enjoying a career as a respected professional artist spanning fifty years and well-known as a leading pioneer of innovative art education initiatives across Manitoba. His Pre-Cambrian Shield inspired works have for several decades graced the walls of numerous fine art galleries including Mayberry Fine Art and The Winnipeg Art Gallery and have also found their home in many prestigious  private and corporate collections. He has been sharing his gift as teacher since the early beginnings of his art career. His attentive and deeply grounded one-on-one teaching style creates a unique and deeply nourishing learning environment for beginners to advanced to grow, express and mature as artists. These classes offer an opportunity for students to examine the formal or abstract qualities in nature, discovering underlying rhythms, structures and motifs. Included are studies in tone, colour perspective, the creative use of your own photographs, drawing from the masters and techniques for enhancing concentration and awareness. The atmosphere is friendly and non-intimidating and the classes are suitable for beginners and regular exercisers alike; everyone is welcome!

YOGA WITH HEATHER MCDERMID

6 Weds, 7:30-9pm, Oct 4 – Nov 8, $70 Members, $75 Non-Members

Heather believes that Yoga is for everyone. The style she teaches is gentle to the body with the breath as the centre and focus. Working from a place of breath and awareness, the body opens, the mind becomes peaceful and prana (energy) is activated to allow deep healing for the whole body. Suitable for beginner and advanced students alike. Come with a yoga mat and water bottle.

A class just for the boys! The NEW BOYS FUNK HIP HOP CLASS at the GAAC will be offering the first class for FREE! We are thrilled to welcome back AJ from McConnell School of Dance. Miss AJ is a highly skilled Irish dancer who has been dancing for over 20 years after starting lessons with McConnell School at the age of 2 ½. She has been an instructor with the school for six years, teaching students from pre-school to adult and for beginner to advanced levels. She is passionate about her Irish heritage and has performed and toured to many parts of the world with the McConnell School of Dance. As an instructor she is known to work her students hard, but knows how to make class fun for all.

She has completed her grade 10 theory requirements, will be completing her grade 10 practical exam within a year and will continue to work towards achieving the Associate of The Royal Conservatory (ARCT) Teacher’s diploma, which is an internationally respected teaching qualification and the highest academic standings awarded by The Royal Conservatory.

MUSIC EDUCATION WITH CAROLINA NAGY

We are delighted to introduce Carolina Nagy as a new instructor at the centre offering four different programs in music, detailed below. Carolina has extensive musical training, with a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance and Masters work in Performance at the University of Manitoba Marcel Desautels Faculty of Music, with continued education in Orchestral Studies at the University of Ottawa while playing as an associate member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. With a strong focus on Behavioural Psychology throughout University, a background in Early Childcare Education and fifteen years of teaching experience, Carolina is able to offer an exceptional learning environment catered to the pace and unique learning style of each individual.

EARLY MUSIC DEVELOPMENT FOR PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN

$135 for five Tuesdays, Fall Term Oct 11 to Nov 8 and Winter Term(1) Nov 15 to Dec 13

Ages baby to one – 10-10:30am, Ages two to three years from 10:35-11:05am, Ages four to five from 11:10-11:40am

Through simple songs, movement, rhythm instruments and body exploration, children can develop their innate understanding of music, preparing them for private lessons in the future. Lessons are fun and interactive for the children and the parents.

QUALITY MUSIC EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

$135 for five Saturdays, Fall Term Oct 8 – Nov 5 and Winter Term(1) from Nov 12 – Dec 10

Grades K to 2 from 9-9:30am and Grades 3 to 6  from 9:35-10:05am

Children can expect rhythm ensembles that foster team building skills, singing together to create community and creative movement to develop individual expression. If there is interest, it may be possible to accommodate other ages.

GROUP FIDDLE CLASSES

$135 for five Saturdays, Fall Term Oct 8 – Nov 5 and Winter Term(1) from Nov 12 – Dec 10

Grades K to 2 from 10:10-10:40am and Grades 3 – 6  from 10:40-11:10am

This will be a fun learning environment to learn to play the violin through lively fiddle tunes. Exploration of many variations of ensemble music including playing in rounds, homophonic harmonies and counterpoint.

INDIVIUDAL LESSONS IN VIOLIN FOR ALL AGES

$35/30 Minutes, $37.50/45 Minutes, $40/60Minutes, Saturdays, 10 week sessions beginning Oct 8 – Dec 10 with time slots starting at 11:15am

Private lessons are structured so that each individual is free to develop at their own pace and style of learning.

A big welcome back to long-time artist and much-loved theatre instructor Angela from MTYP who will be teaching another season of theatre at the centre. Theatre means expressing yourself through movement and voice work, making it a tremendous opportunity for sporty kids and artsy kids alike.

Creative Drama for Kindergarten to Grade Three (1 hour)

A fun and encouraging introduction to theatre and drama, this class combines the fun of making simple masks, props, and puppets with the adventure of using those creations in acting out stories. Students develop their imaginations and powers of self-expression through drama games, music and dance, story theatre, and role playing.  A great class for anyone who loves to make believe!

Junior Acting for Grades Four to Six (1 hour)

What is acting about?  How do you begin? This course gives you the chance to build your acting skills through dramatic exercises, creative movement and story creation.  Learn to share ideas and invent scenes through improvisation and teamwork. Join the fun of imagining, learning, and performing.

ADULT DRAWING AND PAINTING WITH GRAHAM CLARKE

Drawing $65 for five weeks from 10am-noon on alternating Wednesdays September 21, October 5, 19, November 2, 16

Painting $130 per 10 week session – Wednesdays 1-3pm September 14 – November 16, Session 2 Jan – Mar, Session 3 Apr – Jun

Graham is a much-cherished founding member of the GAAC, enjoying a career as a respected professional artist spanning fifty years and well-known as a leading pioneer of innovative art education initiatives across Manitoba. His Pre-Cambrian Shield inspired works have for several decades graced the walls of numerous fine art galleries including Mayberry Fine Art and The Winnipeg Art Gallery and have also found their home in many prestigious  private and corporate collections. He has been sharing his gift as teacher since the early beginnings of his art career. His attentive and deeply grounded one-on-one teaching style creates a unique and deeply nourishing learning environment for beginners to advanced to grow, express and mature as artists.

These drawing and painting classes offer an opportunity for students to examine the formal or abstract qualities in nature, discovering underlying rhythms, structures and motifs. Included are studies in tone, colour perspective, the creative use of your own photographs, drawing from the masters and techniques for enhancing concentration and awareness. Patsy is a much-loved long-time instructor at the GAAC. Her Fun and Fitness classes are set to motivating music that makes it easy and fun to get a serious cardiovascular work-out that will develop your muscular strength, endurance and overall health and well-being. The atmosphere is friendly and non-intimidating and the classes are suitable for beginners and regular exercisers alike. Everyone is welcome! Patsy’s Lengthen and Strengthen class is designed to lengthen all muscle groups with gentle stretching exercises to increase flexibility. You can expect muscle strengthening with pilates inspired movements, balance work, and relaxing cool downs to finish. This is not a traditional yoga class, although some yoga poses are practiced. Participants should bring their own mat to class. Dressing in layers is recommended and if possible bring a long, non-stretchy belt. This is a great class to finish off a busy week!  Everyone is welcome!

The Green Acres Art Centre is excited to announce that we have hired an enthusiastic and experienced dance instructor to teach classes starting this fall! We were looking for someone who could provide the high quality and enjoyable programming members have come to expect from the centre. After advertising in local papers and diligently researching and contacting a number of professional dance studios with visions similar to ours, we were privileged enough to find the perfect candidate. The Green Acres Art Centre is delighted to introduce Alycia Campbell as our new dance instructor!

 

Alycia is an independent dance instructor who has a love for sharing her gift of dance with the youth of her community. She has been dancing since the age of three and instructing dance for thirteen years for all ages and skill levels. Her primary focus is the instruction of Pre-Ballet, Ballet, Lyrical, Pre-Jazz, Jazz, and Creative Movement that is of the highest quality in terms of age appropriate choreography and solid technique.  She has also had significant training and development opportunities which have added Tap, Hip Hop, Jazz Funk, Modern, and Contemporary to her portfolio.

 

We are also thrilled to welcome Miss Elena Modrzejewski who will instruct Friday classes under the direction of Alycia. Like Alycia, Elena has been dancing since the age of three and has been further developing her expertise under Alycia’s direction for the past eight years. She is an experienced instructor who offers a current and contemporary style to the program.

 

Alycia shares our belief that a community centre can offer a balance of recreational dance that is safe and fun while at the same time providing a strong foundation of skill that allows confidence and personal growth to flourish. We are confident that Alycia’s community-minded spirit and passion for dance will enrich the Green Acres Art Centre dance program and contribute to the well-being of members, their families and our community.

 

We invite you to join us in welcoming Ms. Alycia and Miss Elena to the centre and look forward to a great year of dance! If you would like to meet Alycia in person, she will be attending both registration nights on Sept 7 and 15 from 6-8pm at the Teulon Rockwood Centennial Centre and can answer any questions you may have.

A student enrolled in more than one dance class will receive $50 off the second dance class.

Fall Program planning is well underway at the centre.  Registration will happen at the Teulon Rockwood Centennial Centre as part of a joint registration with other community groups on Sept 7th and 15th from 6pm to 8pm.   Thank you Teulon-Rockwood Recreation Commission for organizing this event for us!

HIGHLAND DANCE WITH MISS LESLEY BOND

$260 for 20 weeks on Tuesdays from November 8 to April 11 – Beginners (new and returning) from 6:30-7:30pm and Returning Intermediate from 7:30-8:30pm (fees TBA)

We are excited to once again offer Highland dance classes this fall with our much-loved and long-time instructor Miss Lesley. We are fortunate to have a local talent like Lesley in our community who has such extensive experience both as a Highland dancer, competitor and instructor.

 

IRISH DANCE WITH MISS AJ FROM THE MCCONNELL SCHOOL OF DANCE

$325 for 25 weeks on Mondays from October to April – Ages 4 to 6 from 6:15-7:15pm and Ages 7 to 11 from 7:15-8:15pm (exact dates and fees TBA)

We are thrilled to welcome back AJ from McConnell School of Dance. Miss AJ is a highly skilled Irish dancer who has been dancing for over 20 years after starting lessons with McConnell School at the age of 2 ½. She has been an instructor with the school for six years, teaching students from pre-school to adult and for beginner to advanced levels. She is passionate about her Irish heritage and has performed and toured to many parts of the world with the McConnell School of Dance. As an instructor she is known to work her students hard, but knows how to make class fun for all.

 

½ HOUR INDIVIDUAL LESSONS FOR ALL AGES IN GUITAR, BASS AND DRUMS WITH SHANE TAITE

$22 per ½ hour lessons – Sundays with time slots starting at 10am (exact dates TBA)

Shane is back this year to share his expertise of various music styles, genres and techniques. Shane has been playing music most of his life and has a degree in guitar with the London college of music. Classes are open to all ages who are interested in music and taking their fascination to the next level. Whether you’re into rock, blues, country, pop, strumming chords around the camp fire, singer songwriting or laying down solos in the studio, he will have a lesson plan for you.

 

½ HOUR INDIVIDUAL LESSONS IN PIANO WITH ASHLEY TEICHRIB

$18 per ½ hour lesson – Mondays with time slots starting at 4pm (exact dates TBA)

We are excited to welcome Ashley to the centre. She has been teaching piano to all ages in both practical and theory for eight years. She is much loved by the children she teaches and enjoys playing the piano regularly with her family and church group. She has completed her grade 10 theory requirements, will be completing her grade 10 practical exam within a year and will continue to work towards achieving the Associate of The Royal Conservatory (ARCT) Teacher’s diploma, which is an internationally respected teaching qualification and the highest academic standings awarded by The Royal Conservatory.

 

MUSIC EDUCATION WITH CAROLINA NAGY

We are delighted to introduce Carolina Nagy as a new instructor at the centre offering four different programs in music, detailed below. Carolina has extensive musical training, with a Bachelors of Music in Violin Performance and Masters work in Performance at the University of Manitoba Marcel Desautels Faculty of Music, with continued education in Orchestral Studies at the University of Ottawa while playing as an associate member of the Ottawa Symphony Orchestra. With a strong focus on Behavioural Psychology throughout University, a background in Early Childcare Education and fifteen years of teaching experience, Carolina is able to offer an exceptional learning environment catered to the pace and unique learning style of each individual.

 

EARLY MUSIC DEVELOPMENT FOR PRE-SCHOOL CHILDREN

$135 for five Tuesdays, Fall Term Oct 11 to Nov 8 and Winter Term(1) Nov 15 to Dec 13, Ages baby to one – 10-10:30am, Ages two to three years from 10:35-11:05am, Ages four to five from 11:10-11:40am

Through simple songs, movement, rhythm instruments and body exploration, children can develop their innate understanding of music, preparing them for private lessons in the future. Lessons are fun and interactive for the children and the parents.

 

QUALITY MUSIC EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

$135 for five Saturdays, Fall Term Oct 8 – Nov 5 and Winter Term(1) from Nov 12 – Dec 10, Grades K to 2 from 9-9:30am and Grades 3 to 6  from 9:35-10:05am

Children can expect rhythm ensembles that foster team building skills, singing together to create community and creative movement to develop individual expression. If there is interest, it may be possible to accommodate other ages.

 

GROUP FIDDLE CLASSES

$135 for five Saturdays, Fall Term Oct 8 – Nov 5 and Winter Term(1) from Nov 12 – Dec 10, Grades K to 2 from 10:10-10:40am and Grades 3 – 6  from 10:40-11:10am

This will be a fun learning environment to learn to play the violin through lively fiddle tunes. Exploration of many variations of ensemble music including playing in rounds, homophonic harmonies and counterpoint.

 

INDIVIUDAL LESSONS IN VIOLIN FOR ALL AGES

$35/30 Minutes, $37.50/45 Minutes, $40/60Minutes, Saturdays, 10 week sessions beginning Oct 8 – Dec 10 with time slots starting at 11:15am

Private lessons are structured so that each individual is free to develop at their own pace and style of learning.
